Who owns the California State Universities? Is it private or public? I'm reporting on a case and LAPD say it is private and CSUN cops say it is public. Google says nothing. :)

I think you are misunderstanding what it means to be “public.” The CSU system is a public school system, but that does not mean that anyone in the public has unfettered access to the property. Please provide more details about what you are actually asking if you want a more detailed answer.

It is a public school owned by the state. Now, you say UniversitieS which makes me wonder if you are talking about all of the universities in the state of California. The state contains both privately owned universities as well as state owned universities (which are called public universities).
