I saw it last night, and I found it to be incredibly depressing. The art direction and sound/music was beautiful though. I never read the book as a child, so I really don't have anything to compare it to.

I had liked the book when I was younger, and actually re-read it in a bookstore prior to seeing it Sunday. I really liked it, even though the jumpy camera work in some scenes made me queasy. (See my related question: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1759869 )
