  • I believe it was Dr. Michael Baden (I can't recall at the moment), who was a Medical Examiner in New York for many years, who said that the smell of death is akin to a combination on sour milk and rotten meat. That should answer both questions for you.
  • Buy a small pig, have it killed, put it outside, and give it a sniff test every week. Forensic students are trained using dead pigs of varying degrees of ripeness to study human decomposition (e.g., two, four, and six weeks dead). Pigflesh is supposed to decay in a similar fashion as human flesh. The smell is certainly ripe. I, umm, err, have seen and smelt the little piggies.
  • Go look on the side of the road and find a dead sckunk,put it in a jar of water and dont open until next Halloween.
