Help answer this question below.
The percentage is very low.
Only a homeless person or a person with a psychological disorder, would do this.
I never arrested a person that was not guilty.
I think some would if the odds were against them & the battle would be a long & expensive one.
I tnink they do if they have no chance of being aquitted. we dont have that system.+6
SOmetimes the D.A, will offer a very short sentence to a person that they believe maybe innocent just to gain the conviction. If the person could not bail out, instead of going back and forth to court and staying in jail for God knows how long, they may opt to take the deal and get the hell out of there. They can get it expunged later to remove it off their record.
I'm sure of it, know people, and strangely how all of them were not rich. +5
Of course. It all comes down the cost benefit analysis. Sometimes it makes more sense to plead guilty, even if you are innocent, to avoid the risk and expense of trial.
Good question. I would say probably not usually, but I'm sure that it has and does happen.
Of course it would be needed in some cases.
Speaking for myself, I would not agree to a plea bargain if I was innocent.
Definitely. The problem with "truth" is that it can easily be manipulated. So even though an innocent person may be merely accused of a crime, if someone (a lawyer) can make the jury believe the "truth" that they are spewing (which is obviously not true) then why shouldn't the innocent person agree to a bargain? If a lawyer has evidence that could lead people to think I'm guilty, then instead of being innocent until proven guilty it's now guilty until proven innocent. When an innocent person gets into that kind of situation, self survival kicks in and they'll just do anything they can to limit the amount of punishment they will face because of the inherent flaws in society. It's just the way it is.
Sometimes it seems more money is spent protecting the guilty than defending the innocent. Money talks and justice walks? Why allow it?

Do you think Noriega will get the death penalty in Panama for his crimes?
Won't that make Frenchy hypocrites for extradicting him?

I was going to ask the same thing, John.

John, you are incorrect in your assumption that only the homeless or those with mental problems, would do this. They are a small percentage, contrary to your stats. In fact, most of them don't care where they end up. It is primarily middle class people who do not have the money or time (take off work, obligations, etc) who resign themselves to anything just to get out of the injustice system.

I definitely disagree John. There was a report on CNN not too long ago of a guy who purposely broke the law because he couldn't get a job or gov't assistance (meaning he didn't have a way to survive) so he could at least get his 3 squares and a cot. That doesn't seem very delusional for a homeless man.
