I wouldn't think so; binge drinking has been going on forever, in all parts of the world, before the US did the mass slide into conspicuous consumption since WW2. One cause of binge drinking, IMO, is lack of a sense of value or purpose in life, which the culture of consumer excess might contribute to a little.
