unfortunately, I have come to link the word to the type of kids I used to teach. If they didn't join they pretty much could say goodbye to life. If they did join... pretty much the same ending. Sad. I have been to way too many funerals for young kids.

Large groups of semi-inebriated youths who hang around looking sinister and intimidating whilst verbally abusing passers by. This isn't such a big problem in my town, where these groups do exist (known as 'chavs' by the majority of people here) and make the occasional threat but are generally too cowardly to get involved in real violence. In other areas though I know these gangs can be extremely dangerous and result in frequent agression and sometimes even murder. Obviously gang can have non-negative connotations, it can just be another word for a group of people who share interests or friendship but that is not what immediately springs to mind when I hear the word. Has the media constructed instilled this negativity in my mind? Very possibly because of their frequent references to 'gangs', 'hoodies' and the like. Unfortunately there is very little good press where the term is used.

A group of people, good or bad. because you can say "That is my gang."- reffering to your fav group of friends, not meaning any harm. or you can say "That gang is called 'Bloods'(example.)" -reffering to a harmful gang.

I used to think of Alfalfa and Spanky. Now I think of MS-13 and the evil violent gang of hoodlums that are yet another gift from our neighbors south of the border.
