Help answer this question below.
It's been a while since the last time I had an English exam! I used to first memorize the new vocabularies and then study the grammar. Websters is a good dictionary to learn the American pronunciations and Oxford is the best choice if you want to learn how to use words in sentences correctly.
It depends on the topic. I've never seen an exam in this subject that was broad enough to cover it all. So it depends on whether you're studying Shakespeare, Romantic Poets, Existentialism, Transcendentalism ... or spelling, grammar and syntax.
I'd study what I expected to be on the exam.

im in grade 12 so we dont really take grammar anymore, we take literature analysis and independent novel study.

Then you should be more specific about the exam you're studying for. There isn't much to say for literature analysis. First study your teacher's notes then go throw the parts of the book which need more consideration. But for novel if it is made into a movie you better first get and watch it. This will help you to learn about the story, the opening, the ending, characters, et cetera. If you couldn't find any movie you can search for the analysis on the novel in the net so you can learn more about the writers intentions which will help you to have a better understanding of the novel. Go to Google and write the name of the novel and then add novel analysis at the end.
