  • No, a Psychologist is not a medical doctor.
  • Psychologists are not medical doctors and are not licensed to prescribe medication. A psychiatrist on the other hand is a medical doctor with further specialist training in psychiatry. Either a GP, a family practitioner or a psychiatrist can prescribe medication for depression.

  • Missouri is among several states where psychologists are pursuing broader privileges, the coalition said. Louisiana, New Mexico, the U.S. territory of Guam and the Defense Department allow specially trained psychologists to prescribe medications to patients, according to a coalition press release. • A Psychologist is not a medical doctor, he or she is a doctor of philosophy technically. The APA has recently endorsed the PURSUIT of medical priveledges by Psychologists but they have not yet been granted uniformly. However, many will say that therapy is much more effective in terms of treating the symptoms of depression than prescriptions are. In fact, CNN just released a study about the ineffectiveness of anti-depressants...if you are interested you should check it out. They do work for some people but therapy can work just as well or better for many.
