Yes. Because then everybody would ultimately have their own sub versions of software. Everything would probably remain compatible as long as everybody used the fame types of file formats but malicious software would be less likely to have the potential for damage across a wide spectrum of systems than it does today.

No. The two will always co-exist. Open source will dominate things that people do for pleasure, of for which there is a very general interest. But there will always be specialist packages which someone wants written but no-one is interested enough to write of their own accord, and these will have to be paid for.

Open source will always suffer not because it produces an inferior product (because it does not), but because they tend not to invest in marketing. Commercial producers spend as much or more on marketing for their products as on the product itself. That puts the product out there, which is all they need. Because we're sheep. We'll buy anything that is marketed well, even if it's crap. Need proof? Why would anyone buy a $300+ Microsoft Office suite when you could get 97% of the same functionality from Open Office 2.0 for free? Marketing.
