  • Basically it acknowledges that your a member of the church, and rids you of Satan then, I believe i heard that in the bible.
  • Baptism is showing your humbleness and servitude to the Lord. It DOES NOT rid you of Satan. That happens when you accept Christ in to your life. (or when you are Saved) Being baptized is just your way of showing God that he is your Savior and you are his servant. If you are wondering because you are not sure if you would like to get your children baptised, i would advise you not to. Let them make the choice when they are older. Although we are born in to sin, children are Sinless in God's eyes. Dont think of it from Catholicism's point of view.... Think of it from God's point of view.
  • It is simply an ancient initiation ritual. The practice pre-dates Christianity.
  • Since this is in the Mormon section, I'll answer from a Mormon perspective. Our Fourth Article of Faith declares: We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. We obviously believe that we are baptized for the remission of sins. Of course, without faith, it just gets the person wet. A person officially becomes a member of the Church during their confirmation which takes place shortly after baptism (sometimes mere minutes, sometimes the following day). Baptism is an outward sign of the spiritual rebirth.
  • Baptism really has two purposes. 1.After one has repented of all their sins, Baptism is symbolic that their sins will be washed away. 2.It is also the Gate by which one enters into the kingdom of God(Church). This is why Jesus Christ was Baptized. He did not have any sins, so did not need his sins washed away, but he did need to enter the gate into the kingdom of God. Showing, that no one was exempt, except little children. Then after baptism, one should have hands layed on their head to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. It is the Holy Ghost who actually removes our sins, through the baptism of fire. Without both ordinances a person is not free from sin. While Jesus has the power to remove sins in certain situations, he will not circumvent his own doctrines. He has instituted Baptism, and the Gift of the Holy Ghost, as a means of removing ones sins...Later
