An interest is something that can be put to one side to deal with the rest of life, but an obsession is compulsive and takes precedence so that it interferes with your ability to perform other tasks, making it 'irrational'.

Generally, obsessions have their root in some anxiety and/or make the obsessed individual appear unreasonable.

Good luck memorizing EVERYTHING about ancient history and nature ; )

Seriously though, when that interest takes a chunk of your time and thoughts that could be employed in other areas of your life that might need it, I think it might become an obsession.
