  • why fight taliban? is there really al qaeda?
  • Find out who is funding them with money and weapons. Put pressure on those countries. Obviously, it's a business----a drug business. Follow the money. That seems what motivates people nowadays.
  • A population-centric strategy. One based upon empowerment, providing opportunities, providing alternatives and creating localised safety and stability FIRST. The strategy should be, in my opinion, focused on allowing Iraqis and Aghans to be in charge of their own security. We must take a back seat. Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan must become empowered, they must become bigger actors on the world stage and get increased international support. A stronger government, stronger support, a greater economy, enhanced service provision, greater legitimacy - those things will help defeat the Taliban and al-Q by taking away their support bases. It's a bit of a paradox though - you need stability in order to beat insurgents, but you need to beat insurgents in order for stability to come.
