I'd have to say it's the job of policeman/woman. They are required to uphold the letter of the law, even though, in many instances, that is not the best course of action. Some officers are forced to uphold laws that even they themselves do not agree with. If they don't, then they themselves are guilty of breaking the law. Of course, many take on the job because they like the power and authority that a badge provides and quite a few use their badges as a license to dispense their own style of punishment and personal judgment. If that's not hypocritical, then I don't know what is.
