G'day Airborne Ranger, Thank you for your question. It was the end of the long Mayan calendar. However, it was considered to be a reason for celebration not dread by the Mayans. They would then start a new calendar. It is similar to the end of the millenium. I have attached sources for your reference. It's based on something about the Mayan calendar and the end of one of their major counting periods. Actually, there was an article in some newspapers today via the Associated Press where they interviewed some people of Mayan descent who said it's really nothing except a crossing point in their calendar. Kinda like Y2K. Or maybe they just want the world to THINK that. ;-)
