  • Go to the maker of the cd-rom and see if they have a patch for Vista.
  • If you get the chance to add a second computer, you could try running an open-source (free) operating system such as Linux Ubuntu. This can open the door to a variety of solutions to the sort of hardware problem you describe. But it's not a bad idea to keep one computer running on your old Microsoft operating system, at least until you are quite satisfied you can do all you want with (say) Ubuntu. A flash memory stick is a good way to move data between two computers set up like this with different operating systems.
  • The patch is called LINUX. Seriously, Vista isn't compatible with anything (not even Vista) and only certain versions of Win7 have XP-compatibility. If you want to run something made for XP under Vista, you are SOL. If you want to run much of anything under Vista, you are on shaky ground. Hell, even running Vista without any apps is a bit quirky! Never trust a piece of software that the company that made it apologizes for. http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/126864,microsoft-admits-vista-mistake-pushes-windows-7-features.aspx http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/shattered_dreams_and_broken_promises_vistas_failure_launch http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1898610_1898625_1898627,00.html
