420 is a reference to drugs, or drug use. Particularly weed. And if you wanna know WHY 420.. "420 (pronounced four-twenty) is a term used in North America as a discrete way to refer to cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with Cannabis culture. The origins of the term are obscure, but it is widely accepted that in the early 1970s, a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California used to meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke cannabis at the Louis Pasteur statue.[1][2] Cannabis users gather on April 20 ("4/20" in the United States dating shorthand) to celebrate and consume cannabis. "420 friendly" is sometimes seen on advertisements for roommates, indicating that the current occupants are tolerant of cannabis users" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_(cannabis_culture) All hail wikipedia.

I always wondered why 420, my experience is, by the time I finish work and get home and change my clothes its usually about 420.
-
It stands for 4/20, the 20th of April. It is a day where everyone smokes pot. The last 4/20 I experienced, an entire nearby hill was covered with people smoking and otherwise ingesting. There were literally clouds of smoke rising. I think that 4/20 was the last day that pot was legal in California or something like that. EDIT: check out this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4/20
-
it originally started as "it's 4:19 got a minute?" that was the code for "do you want to go smoke pot"
-
The #420,refers to the time 4:20,for teenagers means thats the time parents are still at work,so 4:20 means time to party(smoke pot) while the parents are still not home yet....
-
It apparently happened in San Rafael California at the San Rafael high school beginning in 1971,and goes on to this day. They would meet at 4:20 PM and all light up the weed in front of the statue of Louis Pasteur on the grounds.A guess Louis gets high on this every school day.

Good Question I have wondered that too!

MrSublime is absolutely right. There's no other reason, has nothing to do with police codes or any other such nonsense. http://www.snopes.com/language/stories/420.asp

a number

There are so many things that made 420 the number it is. Sublime is right, in San Rafael High they used to smoke after school,, at 420 but not just infront of that statue. Sometimes they would smoke on Mt. Tamalpias, and they would always use the code 420 to ask if they wwanted to smoke. Because this is all in Marin, and the Grateful Dead are local here, they spread that number around the country. In California, Prop 215 was the proposition that made weed availible for prescription, but StateBill 420 loosened the laws on medical marijuana. I even heard the 420 is now the code for cops to tell each other they caught someone with weed, alothough I'm not sure about that. I live in Marin, so I know all about 420, and I want people to know what really started it
