Because the prize was for work with ribosomes (part of the mechanism that translates DNA to mRNA to proteins). Thomas Steitz shared it with two other people who were also working on ribosomes. Joan Steitz works with ribonucleoproteins, which are similar but not quite the same. It's a different area, and I guess the committee didn't want to recognize it this year.
