That depends a lot on where you are. California has massives, which are huge raves that take place in a rented arena usually ( last year EDC broke records with 100,000 people in attendance! :D ). But in most city's there is an underground rave scene. But for the most part people dance to the musics man. :p

I've never been to one, but I've had a boyfriend and friends who go to those. What goes on at a rave? From what I can tell, dancing, techno music, flashy lights, and drugs. There's also a certain style of dress that many ravers wear. Look it up on Google. There are people who don't do drugs and people who wear regular clothing who go to the raves, though. Keep that in mind. It's a stereotype that all raves are about is drugs (mainly ECSTASY), sex, and "shitty" music.

Dancing, a lot of glowsticks, dressing in colorful clothes, massage circles, drug experimentation, hooking up, meeting new people, out of body experiences, having fun, trading chunky beaded bracelets, sucking on pacifiers, strobe lights, mind expansion, sweating, etc. Since fun is sort of an objective thing, I would say I give them an 8 when I'm feeling sociable, and a 2 or 3 when I'm not. They are still underground where I live. Usually they are in old warehouses or closed down stores that people rented for the night. They are better when it seems like its exclusive and you have been invited by the organizers. But usually people bring their friends and word travels around.
