Yes I do. I think that it's obvious just from looking at some of the posts here on Answerbag dealing with breastfeeding vs. formula feeding and various other parenting techniques. Nobody wants to think that they are not doing the right thing for their children.

I have never gotten that feeling, but I don't suppose I pay that much attention to it. I have gotten that feeling from a few certain individuals here and there, but not from the media IMO.

Not in England. There is a drive for mothers to choose breastfeeding over formula milk, but not so that the mothers feel pressurised into it. I was on placement with a midwife who gave expecting paretns a whole load of information on various aspects of childbirth, pregnancy and other related issues, and one included was breastfeeding vs formula feeding. She always advised the fmaily to choose breastfeeding but accepted that not everyone wanted to do it that way, and a good majority of mothers opted for formula milk instead, I would estiamte about 70:30 split. I think that there should be a wealth of readily accessible information sources with the benefits and drawbacks of each method, but that the mothers should choose their own way. However, in my future career, I would always advise breastfeeding unless there was a significant health reason not to.

I think we need to look at that larger picture here, today we are all driven by the need to do the best for our children and more often than not that means going back to work when the babie is at an early age (12 weeks or so and sometimes younger). Childcare, day care and nannies are all thought about during pregnancy and as a concesquence some mothers reach the conclusion that breast feeding would not be a valid option due to time commitments etc and the fact that having to sit express milk to sustain their baby whilst the mother has to work just wouldnt be viable. It is a shame that in our society the need for financial stability comes before the good old family values but then again in this day and age we need money to have any kind of family life! However on another note, formula milk has without doubt saved the lives of thousands of babies in the world so we should not immediately rule it out as the bad choice, it does after all give the child the necessary nutrients the child needs to flourish - the rest is down to the love the child gets as to how the child develops!
