  • People were bored. I'm not a fan of the whole idea.
  • Most ancient societies needed a secure environment for the perpetuation of the species,a system of rules to handle the granting of property rights, and the protection of bloodlines. The institution of marriage handled these needs. For instance, ancient Hebrew law required a man to become the husband of a deceased brother's widow.
  • Marriage predates reliable recorded history, so the answer to this question is largely speculation and conjecture. Many speculate that formal marriage came into being as a way to ensure paternity of children in order to pass on material wealth after technology advanced to the point that humans could produce surplus (ie wealth). Note that this assumes a patrilineal inheritance model. However, some societies had matrilineal inheritance models and still had a concept of marriage. Many speculate that women needed to have someone to provide and care for them (and their children) while they were pregnant, nursing, and raising the children (food, clothing, shelter, security/protection); thus, marriage arrangements arose to further the male’s commitment to reproduction. Some believe that it was a combination of both. Still others believe it was an institution ordained by one or more deities. Personally, I agree with the combination of protection for women and children and the ensuring of paternity.
  • Marriage was introduced by The Devil so that men and women may face the greatest suffering. God's original order to Man was simple "Go forth and multiply"!! Impregnate as many women as he could. Nothing was ever mentioned about marriage. In the Old Testament, all a guy had to do was to "know" a woman, and make her pregnant. No marriage ceremony, marriage vows, nothiingggg ....
  • Jealous men being all territoral and stingy....
