Here is the complete question/puzzle: . . CRAZY HORSES When old Hiram Bartram kicked the bucket, his will assigned all of his property to his three heirs, his son Willard, his daughter Naomi, and his nephew Bucky. A codicil divided the livestock, a small herd of horses, thus: Will was to get half the livestock, Naomi one-third, and Bucky one-ninth. The three heirs found that there were seventeen horses, and racked their brains to try to divide the stock, with no success. The realtor, Harriet Furman Pyghe took one look at the herd and separated the beasts evenly and neatly in about two minutes. How?

The realtor borrowed one extra horse so he had 18 horses to divide over the three heirs. Willard got 18/2 = 9 horses Naomi got 18/3 = 6 horses Bucky got 18/9 = 2 horses total they have 17 horses. There was one horse left, which was returned to it owner from who the realtor borrowed it.
