"I knew illegals that came...", why are they caught up in the talk? If they are illegals why should they not be and if you meant they are legals that are here on a student visa they may be over staying the time limit on their visa in which case they too are breaking the law. +5

You're reading When it comes to illegal immigration the 1st one hit are those from down South who come across the border, then Chinese & other Asians via container ship. I knew illegals that came by way of student visa from Europe. Why are they caught up in the talk?

They were not illegal when they came, but yes, they were when they failed to go back. Because they did not look like an "illegal" no one never really paid them any mind. And because they don't look like the illegals paraded around on the evening news I guess it makes it easier for them to sneak back in through more normal channels. I knew one from the ex-Soviet bloc who fretted about going to see a sick aunt because she did not know how she would get back in. Somehow she did and she still did not have a legal visa. 3+

In which case the last line should have been "why are they {NOT} caught up in the talk". My guess is for those that like to get a 30 second blurb in the news the public gets more enraged by those that sneak or are smuggled across the border as opposed to those who get here by legal means in the first place and just over stay. I also have no idea of the numbers of either group and I would also surmise that most would feel more threatened from a terroists point as I doubt most meaning to do harm will go to the trouble of trying to get a student visa.

Many of those who pulled off 9/11 did come here by legal visa, and hid right under our noses in plain sight. As I am sure some of the next would be attackers are right now. You sure have better freedom of movement to carry out your deeds if you don't have to do it from hiding. ;-|
