  • The university I was at, did not have half term breaks. But I have no idea if this has changed in the intervening 23 years, or if it varies from one university to another. However I suspect not. Summer & Christmas breaks are a couple of weeks longer for university students than they are for ordinary schools.
  • Don't know about England, but there has always been short half term breaks in the U.S. In Fall for Thanksgiving break, and in Spring for Easter. They are just called Fall and Spring break, now, but they come at the appropriate times.
  • They are called "reading weeks". Some universities have them, and some do not. In those universities that do have reading weeks, it is likely that they won't occur across all subjects. It's very much up to the department to chose whether to allow one. It is usually mid-way through the term (this was when I had mine), but there are exceptions (my boyfriend had his two weeks in!).. it is unlikely to be at the same time as school half term though.
