Do you remember when MasterCard was called Master Charge and Visa was called Bank of America?

BankAmericard, it was actually called. In those days credit cards used tissue receipts and there was no way to verify a card was not fraudulent at the point of sale. You had to have good credit to get a nationally recognized credit card. Young people had to start with store-specific charge cards while they built credit. In most cases you could not buy a house without 20% down payment and it was not a govenrment responsibility to get the uncreditworthy into over-their-head home loans. If it were still like that then we would not be in so much trouble. As it is, some people are learning savings and frugality habits for the first time while living in the second half of their lives.

Since I don't live in America, Visa was never called Bank of America or anything like that. Barclay's called their cared "Barclaycard", but it was always one of the two main credit card organisations behind it.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I'm old enough to remember when Master Card and BankAmericard sponsored shows like "Starsky and Hutch" or "The Brady Bunch"...;-D...

Mastercharge was issued by a group of banks and continued with that name until the cards began to be used for check guarantees and debits. They then changed the name to Mastercard. BankAmericard was initially issued only by Bank of America. When they started letting other banks issue it they changed it to Visa. Now almost all banks issue both. I have had both with the original names.

LOL yes I can and i remember when you went to the gas station there would be attendant to pump the gas, check fluis, check air pressure in your tires and ask if yiou wanted Ethyl! Annd there was a garage at the station with a mechanic on duty to fix your car if something wss wrong- now if you want a bag of chips and a fountain drink you got the gas station- to fix your car you go the discount dept stores! oh yeah and back then they were called service stations! And if the guy didn't wash your windows- he got fired! And gas was 27 cents a gallon!
