Help answer this question below.

There is the little rhyme, "See a penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck." I used to know a part about picking it up if the penny was head's up, but I no longer remember that part. Does anybody know it?

Who knew this was such a controversial question?!
Apparently there has been a lot of blog traffic on this particular rhyme which appears in The Real Mother Goose with no reference to pennies at all:

See a pin and pick it up,
All the day you'll have good luck.
See a pin and let it lay,
Bad luck you'll have all the day.

The rhyme must have evolved over time to be about pennies. I never heard the part about heads but I knew the one above as "See a penny..."

My Mom always said that no one ever told us that the penny had to be heads up and would recite the poem to us this way:
Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you'll have good luck...
See that penny, let it lye and all that luck will pass you by.
