  • Well, pure water has zero calories, but most people don't consider that a food. Celery, however, has very few calories. (Only about 6 calories in an 8-inch stalk) So, it has been found that the amount of calories your body uses to digest the celery is greater than the amount of calories provided by eating the celery, resulting in a negative caloric result. However, it's really miniscule, and it shouldn't be counted on to help lose weight, since you'd be incapable of eating enough celery to expend 3500 calories (which is how many calories you'd need to expend to lose a pound). One good thing about eating celery, though, is that if you are munching away on celery, you aren't eating anything else. So, if you have the urge to snack, eating celery may help you avoid eating higher-calorie snacks -- and that may help you lose the weight.
  • What I believe you are referencing is actually referred to as the negative calorie effect. How it works is very simple. You eat a certain food which per se has 5 calories. This certain piece of food actually requires that your body burns 30 calories in order to digest it. Thus, you didn't actually accumulate any calories and instead burned calories. It is not a significant amount of calories. So, this is more of a healthy-eating aid than it is a weight loss mechanism. Here is a list of foods that have the negative calorie effect: Apples, Broccoli, Lettuce, Oranges, Zucchini, Watermelon, Pinneapple, Celery, Cranberry, Grapefruit, Asparagus, Cantaloupe, Honey Dew, Peaches, Onions, Mango, Radish, Raspberry, Tomatoes, Lemons, Limes, Garlic, Blueberries, Green beans. There is actually quite a lengthy list, but this is a small amount of the foods that are on it. They are mostly fruits and vegetables.

  • Claim: Eating celery results in negative calories. Status: True. Celery has about 6 calories per 8-inch stalk, making it a dieter's staple. Although it's loaded with latent energy, the amount we are capable of extracting from it is negligible thanks to the plant's cellulose composition. Its ingestion can result in negative calories, but it is a fallacy to believe that effect has to do with energy expended in chewing. Though chewing might feel like a somewhat strenuous activity, it burns about the same amount of energy as watching paint dry. It is the bodily energy devoted to the digestion of the green stalks that exhausts calories. A cold low-calorie drink would enhance the effect, because the liquid needs to be warmed to body temperature, an act that requires further expenditure of energy. http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/celery.asp
