In the film Atonement, James Mcavoy's character walks into a field of what looks like dead nuns. The relevence or references of this scene alludes me. what event is it refering to?

God did I hate that movie. Anyway, everything was about death and loss. Dead nuns? Loss of faith, loss of innocence, loss of the strength in the organized religious belief system? Who knows. It sucked and was such a downer.

I dont know if it references any specific event in history. I think it was just meant to show how wrong his life had gone. He was now having to witness these things that he never would have had to if he hadnt been falsely accused. Most people are religious/have a belief system in some way and so for it to be nuns, most people would never think to murder nuns because of their faith, etc. So it makes the scene of death even worse then if he came upon dead soldiers. The nuns were the innocents, much like him. I am looking forward to hearing if it does reference a specific event.
