  • any number of things could be wrong hesides just the gasket itself. Keep in mind just to replace that they have to pull the top 1/2 of the motor off-which isn't cheap. Since it is blown there are many other things that could have resulted. It is a crummy position to be in for those that are suspicious of others, but when your mechanic tells you there is any number of things that could be wrong "besides" the gasket, He is NOT BSing you. The checks and tests to perform on the motor cannot be done till the tear it down to that point. So it could be the price he estimated for the tear-down replace and replace of the top 1/2, or he could tear it down and find out the motor is all but shot.
