  • I think it's just that this condition is being recognized more than in the past.
  • It is just "diagnosed" more.
  • I think it is not only diagnosed more, but is often over-diagnosed these days. There are children and adults who honestly have ADD, but there are plenty of perfectly healthy kids who are just labeled with ADD and drugged with ritalin.
  • Of course, with the advances in medicine we would expect to see an increase in diagnoses however, I actually think that ADD is being misdiagnosed a lot too. I don't deny that it is a real problem for many children however, I think many parents (and I'm not saying all parents - so don't get offended if you are one) in society today are too busy or don't care enough to give their children the proper attention and care that they need. It is far easier to drug your kids than work out other solutions for misbehaviour. I also think that Doctor's are far too quick to prescribe medication than discuss other options. This isn't just for ADD but other problems as well. My doctor was all to eager to prescribe anti-depressants when I was in for a completely different problem and frequently prescribes antibiotics even if I just want to get a cough checked out. The overuse of antibiotics is what is causing superbugs and I am sure that the misdiagnoses of ADD and subsequent drug prescriptions will catch up with us in the future.
  • Actually about 10-15 years ago it was one of the MOST diagnosed disease in children ages 3-11...i was one of them...One reason so many were diagnosed is that ADD has alot of the same symptoms as more complicated mental problems. Doctors probably thought it was easier to diagnose them with ADD then any thing else. As it was for me...when i was 3 i was diagnosed with ADD they treated me for it for 10 years with no good results...I was finally diagnosed with bipolar Disorder...which is what i am being treated for and have been treated for, for 8 years. So i believe most children have more Complicated diseases then ADD but mostly are not diagnosed until a later age..
  • I think some parents and a lot of teachers just want to keep their children sedated so they pressure doctors for the diagnosis
