I've been told the credit card invitations continue, but I don't know if you can actually get one. I have already heard someone say that after you file to go ahead and try to get a new card. It doesn't seem that you could unless the bankruptcy was caused by something other than unsecured credit card debt, such as medical bills.

Maybe, but why? The credit cards are probably the reason for a persons bankruptcy in the first place. Leave well enough alone and pay cash for everything.
