Good question. Kinda like I"m going 'over' to somewhere or I'm going "up" to somewhere or going "down" to somewhere. What determines which is what - but we use the expressions anyway.

Maybe, and this is only a supposition, most TV shows used to be broadcast live on the early days, so when people appeared they were really "ON" THE AIR.
