Do you think points benefit AB? Do you ever find the system to be intrusive on the real purpose of a question/answer site?

I personally find the points system distracting while also lowering the standard of questions asked and answers given, and is even the root of many disputes. I tend to use the ratings, as ratings on individual questions and answers are useful to me, but I don't see the benefit of cumulative points. It seems to damage the quality of the content on this site. Maybe many members could leave, because its only the addictive nature of collecting points with pseudo-rewards that keeps them coming back, but I'm not convinced that such members are a benefit to the site. I guess, though, that the owners of AB would rather have more people than less.
