The first time it happened I was 16. I never even told anyone because I thought they would think I was crazy. Then, years later, when I was working full time and going to law school full time I was very sleep deprived. This is when it happened. I had a number of episodes. I talked to a neurologist friend and was so happy to find out it was a phenomenon, somewhat unexplained, that others had experienced. It happens right before falling to sleep. There is a noise like a siren that gets progressively louder, along with a light that gets brighter. You do seriously become paralyzed -- unable to move a muscle. During the paralysis you hallucinate. I have experienced someone sitting on my bed, a hand on my back, my bed covers rising and hovering over my body, and the sensation of a bowling ball rolling under my mattress. Once I knew it was not something to be afraid of, I would simply let the thing play out and then go on to sleep. It has been a long time since I've had an experience with it. I get enough sleep these days.
