i agree, bacon should be chewed not crunched
-
I like my bacon softish so you can kind of chew on the fat but the rind should be crispy and chewy. The meat part should be well cooked and chewy but not crip and brittle. This is my opinion and preference.

americans don't like flavor in their meat. They enjoy cooking meat until it is like a hockey puck.
-
Why is it cooked like that? Because some people have concerns about eating undercooked pork. I like crispy bacon because I think it tastes better than chewy bacon; others disagree. It's a simple matter of preference.

I've heard it said that America is the most Christian nation on Earth, perhaps it's just another element of their overdoing everything. Proclaiming to the world their status as Christians who will eat anything because the New Testament says they are allowed to. Sorry, my Athiest and Agnostic friends, for generalising.

Part of the issue may be related to differences in the meat/fat ratios. American bacon tends to have more fat in the slices which are usually cut very thin. It is used less as a meat portion than as a crispy/salty/smoky/sweetish flavor "on the side". It is cooked to render out the fat, so if soft, would be not crispy but limp/translucent and it would seem underdone.

Actually, I prefer bacon to be cooked until just crispy. It's a texture thing. Soft bacon feels very spongy and fatty to me. It's simply a matter of preference. There is no right or wrong way to prepare bacon.

I love my bacon crispy!!

Not all bacon is cooked like that. Most resturants will cook it to the way you like it. Fast food resturants cook alot of it and it is usually pretty uniform on how it comes out. I like mine close to crispy but not quite. My husband likes it cripy. My daughter likes it soft.

I hate soggy bacon, I don't like it hard either. Crispy for me. ;-)
-
I gotta have my bacon crispy. I'm too lazy for chewy bacon! If it was floppy, I would send it back. I also like my meat well done (no pink!), so you can slam me on that also. Every country has its little quirks. I didn't care much for English pastries when I was in London. They looked nice, but had no flavor. They probably think our stuff is too sweet. It's just whatever you are used to.

I don't like crispy bacon at all. I only eat cured bacon because I bearly cook it so there is no crispy involved, and I don't want to get sick.

Try wild boar bacon, crispy or slow cooked soft it amazing...
-
"American" doesn't have anything to do with it. They'll sell it to you crisp, limp or raw, just tell the waitress.
-
It is personal taste. I like mine Very crispy, my husband likes his somewhat floppy still. It took each of us forever to learn to cook it the way the other one likes.
-
Not everyone cooks it that way, but it is supposed to be less harmful for your heart cooked that way. It cooks a lot of the fat out of it. I personally think that if you work hard and sweat, it isn't going to hurt you. We don't have air conditioning, and in the summer it is hot enough that if you don't eat something like bacon, you'll get faint from lack of salt and dehydrated because you can't retain the water you drink.
-
As othrs have stated the extent to which it is cooked can be a personal preference. Also American bacon as opposed to what is served in other countries can be a different cut of meat - in the USA bacon is pork bellies and not in most other countries. +5

bacon should not shatter when you look at it. so soft to crispy for me.

This is a constant argument in our house. Personally, I love my bacon crispy. I'm told I ruin it but it tastes so much better to me that way.
