They say don't idle for more than 10 secs. and that you need to turn off your car. I've heard that you should turn off your car at a red light. But doesn't turning your car off & on use more gas? And isn't it a hassle to turn off & on at all red lights?

This is an easy one. It is ILLEGAL to turn your car off at red lights. DON'T DO IT. On the cost savings side of things Starting your car uses more gas than letting it idle for 1-2 minutes (most models). Even if it used LESS gas you are putting more strain on your starter, injectors, battery, A/C, and just about every other system in your car... the cost savings would never work to your favor.
