I've been enstranged from my family more than a year. I want to reconcile but I've changed so much that I can't imagine how it would feel. It can't be the same old thing, or should it? I can't go back to that. Do it slow, fast, when, where,why? Afraid.

It won't be the same old thing if you're not the "same old thing." Put one toe at a time in the water. I think that first toe is going to be the hardest but you can do it. I'd much rather take that risk than spend the rest of my life wondering what could have been. Something tells me you'll be glad you did;)

Only you know what is right for you. Only do what you are comfortable with. Some relationships are toxic. Some Parents have negative impacts on us. Especially when we are Adults. I have not spoken with my Mother and Sister for many Years. My father past and everything changed. My sister took over my Mother's life. I am the younger child. I am an Adult I am Educated and intelligent and will not tolerate disrespect. You also must be respected if they want to have a relationship with you.
