why dont you speak to the people who run the gym, at the one i go to they will set a program up for you, all you need to tell them is what parts of the body you want to work on.

I dont have an answer BUT i know how you feel cause i do the same thing.

You need to speak to a trainer at the gym and get a personalised workout suitable for you. Don't try and do this yourself and you could be doing damage to your body and not achieving what you want from a fitness regime. My first visit to a gym involved an interview with the trainer, who assessed my fitness level, what I wanted to achieve, we discussed any physical problems I might have, ie dickie knee and lower back problems, diet, weight, fitness... then the trainer took me round the gym showed me how each machine worked, how many repititions I should be doing and then watched to see that I was doing it okay and handling what she laid out for me...my second visit, the trainer just kept an eye on me so that if I had any questions or problems I had help on hand...since then I have really enjoyed the gym and I make it a point to help any new people who look rather bewildered by it. My point is that a reputable gym should at least show you each machine so they know you know how to use it so you don't break yourself or their machine. Investigate if they have a trainer and get some help and don't do it by yourself.

You definitely need a plan of attack BEFORE you get to the gym, otherwise, you're wasting your time wandering around. Why don't you check out a few fitness mags? Try Oxygen - it always has some new ideas for gym/weight routines. Some simple ideas - determine what days you're going to do just cardio (either run on a track or use the cardio machines) - those days, just do cardio, stretch and abs at the end. The lifting days, split into body parts: 1. arms: bi's and tri's 2. chest/back 3. shoulders 4. legs (quads, hamstrings, calves, inner/outer thighs) Some people just do all upper body together on one day and lower body on another day. Others split them up and do bi's/tri's on one day, then chest/back on another and so on. Depends on how much time you have. If you're just beginning - you might want do just do upper body, lower body, cardio. Don't forget to stretch!

Women's Health Magazine online www.womenhealthmag.com has a series of 20 minute workouts that you can print out or download to your ipod. They all focus on different things, such as, core, cardio, butt, etc.

Speak to a trainer at the gym - they can work with you to find a regimen that is tailored to you, and utilizes the specific facilities your gym has to offer.

I like http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness.asp Also, talk to the trainers/gym, they usually give free sessions to try to 'hook' you Also, watch what others do; esp. if a trainer is involved (Grace on "Will and Grace" did this, and it was quite funny)

I like http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness.asp - lots of community, and many resources for tracking your goals. Are you trying to lose any weight/tighten up/become very muscular...that would be key to what kind of program you design. This was a repost, because it said it was marked spam/offensive, for some reason, and when I looked at the q, it seemed to be unanswered again, but now the other answers and my previous one is there. Weird

I used to feel the same way! It may not be the best plan, but I avoid the "machines" now! I do the simplest thing I know- cardio! I like the ellipticals or even just a plain treadmill.... I feel like I've accomplished something when I get all sweaty and out of breath! Haha!! I also looove classes! Don't be embarrassed- everyone has to start somewhere and the others in the classes are usually very receptive- just stand in the back the first few times if you feel self-concious! But they are awesome because you have a guided work out and for me there is motivation because I don't want the others in the class to think that I'm slacking if I miss! :) Hope this helps! You're on the right track!
