It is evidence of poor manners. As a well mannered person, we don't do things for others to be thanked. We do things to be of service to others and to be kind. The focus of etiquette and service is on other person. Offering a "not so gentle reminder," on the other hand, would put the focus on us. This would be selfish and would be an embarrassment for both people involved.
