I always go to them to say Hi!!;D

I would see if they see me, then smile and wave or say hi. If not I would yell their name, depending on how well I know them and want to talk.

'Yo' is my fairly standard response. But tone and how I say it changes based on my relation to them. Very interesting stuff, really-- greetings are such an automated process that its more etiquette than else.
