Vista is weird sometimes. I don't know why it doesn't do it. But ... What I do when I need a special character to be inserted is I use this ALT key combination from the chart: http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/ALTchrc.html ALT/3 -- ♥ ALT/1 -- ☺ ALT/138 -- è ALT/16 -- â–º etc. Use your numeric pad on the right for the numbers. :)

1) "Open Character Map by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Character Map." (you could also type "charmap" in a command line box ("DOS" box). 2) "1. In Character Map, click the Font list, and then click the font you want to use. 2. Click the special character you want to insert into the document. 3. Click Select, and then click Copy. 4. Open your document and click the location in the document where you want the special character to appear. 5. Click the Edit menu, and then click Paste. Many programs allow you to drag special characters into documents. To do this, click the character you want to copy. When the character appears enlarged, drag it into the open document."
