I don't have this problem, so I can't vouch for this solution, but I have read this on several websites. Take 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and mix it with 1 gallon of distilled water. Wet hair to the scalp and massage lightly. Leave in hair for about 15 minutes before washing it out. Repeat this every other day until the buildup is gone. Then use it about once every week or two to keep buildup at bay.

This may seem weird to you..... you can get gum out your hair with WD40... it also works to remove labels and old tape (not necessarily from your hair though). It is the only thing I know that can actually remove permanent marker (not necessarily from your hair either). I'm not saying to try it on your scalp... proceed at your own risk... I've got the gore to try it though... not that I have to... It works good for loosening rusted bolts too.

how about an "oily hair shampoo"? I'm a chick so I know about these things (also a mechanic so I have had WD40 in my hair)
