  • There are no free websites that I know of. The only way I know to do it for free is to start contacting county administrative offices and requesting public records. Some of them still charge a small fee though. Aso contact churches. Most are glad to help and will do it for free. Ancestry.com is well worth the money.
  • Actually there are lots of free websites to start your research with. Check out: http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com/browse.asp?account=246100 You can find other major ones as well http://www.familysearch.org is a free site as well as WorldGenWeb Project at http://www.worldgenweb.org/ Hope this helps!
  • Go to your local library. They have TONS of resources at their fingertips, and in a lot of cases (like at my library) they subscribe to sites that are useful library users, so you don't have to pay, just as long as you use their computers.
  • One of the best places to go for genealogy information is your local genealogy library from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They have almost 5000 (five thousand, no kidding) libraries around the world. They are usually staffed with very helpful volunteers (surprisingly, many of the volunteers are genealogy buffs who are not members of that church- so don't worry about them trying to convert you). Most of the libraries have free web access to lots of genealogy websites that usually require paid subscriptions. Best of all, all of their libraries are FREE. To find one near you, go to: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp you can also try www.familysearch.org. Its full of great information, records and its all free, including free software to track your genealogy.
