• Unfortunately, they've been decommissioned. They have been replaced with the Submarine Rescue Diving Recompression System.

  The USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686) was an East Coast Mother Ship for the DSRV before she was decommissioned in 2001. I once rode the Avalon during a training operation when I was on the Rivers. Really COOL baby, let me tell you!

• Any manned submersible which can withstand the pressures at 5,000 feet below sea level is IMPRESSIVE!

  At 45 PSI for every 100 feet of depth, that's 2,250 PSIG at 5,000 feet. That's 324,000 pounds per square foot, or 162 tons.
  .
  And the DSRV's don't CLAMP onto a submarine. They DOCK. Their "bell" shaped housing has a rubber O-ring on it. They place the bell over the hatch and then pump the water out of the bell. Sea pressure holds the DSRV onto the sub.
  .
  This bell housing has to be large enough to cover the hatch of the sub and allow the hatch area to open up into the bell housing. If I remember correctly, this bell housing had a diameter of just slightly over 50 inches.
  .
  If you assume a radius of 26 inches for the seal, that's nearly 5,000,000 pounds of sea pressure holding the DSRV docked at 5,000 feet!
  .
  None of our subs had a crush depth even close to 5,000 feet, but the capability was built in to allow a WIDE margin for error under extreme circumstances.

• It is right at least in India. Ambulances don't take away dead bodies from hospitals. So the black color mortuary vans are on call 24x7.

• Yeah...during WW2 many German tanks engines froze stiff so they took hours to start...during that time the Red Army was attacking them, thats why they lost.
  Tanks need to be ready 24/7 in a warzone at least.

• There where (IIRC) 19 attempts on Hitler's life, about 16 of those failed due to Hitler changing his mind at the last second.
  Hitler changed his mind a LOT. Regarding the Russian campaign the objective was Moscow, then Leningrad, then Moscow, then Stalingrad, then Moscow AGAIN, then the Ukraine. That is why the Germans lost the war, Hitler was a terrible military leader.

• Yes. Well the pediatrician told me my son would outgrow the "allergy" by the time he was 3. He didn't even give it a name. I found that out on my own years later when I read what the symptoms of analyphylaxis are. My kid is 43 and carries an epipen with him...also benadryl. Pecans/walnuts...deathly. :(
