  • If your kitty is already matted, water will only make it worse. If he is very matted using scissors and shaving clippers for animals may be your only hope. Shaving or cutting these areas will not hurt the growth of your cat's coat. I have encountered this quite a bit, as I have a 25 lb. maine coon that doesn't clean himself that well (and I groom animals). If your kitty is an indoor/outdoor kitty, keeping his tummy and under his arms and legs shaved will help eliminate these mats. Our cat has gotten so bad, at times, that we have had to shave his whole body. True-the other cats probably made fun of him, but he was more comfortable and his coat was better when it started growing in. If you do not want to shave part of your kitty-using some baby powder and brushing him is your last resort. Some of that mats will hurt his body if you do not get them removed. Sores can form under them, fester and will get staf infection. Hope some of this helps, good luck.
