Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a 1996 subaru that has been stalling . Just before this happens the radio, rpm gauge, and the brake light indicator all star dimming. This happened six months ago and the battery was gone. I was told that the starter could be causing this problem.

Not likely the starter. The starter serves no function while the car is running, it doesn't even receive power in any key position except "start". Most likely culprit is the alternator.

Would like to know who suggested to you that the starter could be causing problems for a running car - it won't happen. The alternator provides power to the battery, so if the alternator is bad, then it won't charge the battery and subsequently the car will loose power. Darryl is right in suggesting this as the culprit.

Get the alternator tested and I can almost guarantee you they will tell you it needs replacement. Unless your battery is seriously flawed and can't hold a charge, the alternator should be the culprit.

    Good luck,
    hope this helps
