Yes, a long time acquaintance of mine purchased a ranch in New Mexico, and had to out of necessity due to the remote location. She give talks on how she did it, and is writing a book about it.

There are lots of people living off the grid. Here in my state in India there is a community which is completely off the grid for years. I have found this site which has good information on off grid living. http://www.earthforenergykits.com
