Why is the bible against knowledge/wisdom? (e.g. Forbidden fruit, "destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the cleverness of the clever")

Because if you gain knowledge and wisdom you realise that the bible is a joke. And worst of all you start asking questions and stop lining the churches pockets. Religion is anti intellect, it requires blind faith not intelligence. Thinking for yourself is diametrically opposed to getting your answers from the bible and not thinking at all.

I don't believe religion is anti-intellect; the Christianity I believe in recognizes that our brain is a gift to be used. The wisdom decried in the Bible is the wisdom that is used to DISPLACE God, wisdom sought for its own sake, much as the Bible decries money sought for its own sake (the LOVE of money is the root of all evil). Or anything that all that is "worshiped" instead of God.

I don't know what to make of the point you make. I don't dispute it, but I can't seem to figure out why. Since the major western religions of today originated in a time when we couldn't explain much about our world (relatively speaking), it wouldn't make sense that they would see knowledge/wisdom as a threat. I wasn't until the past few hundred years that the scientific method really began to chip away at our modern religions. I would have to agree with overeducated if we are speaking of modern religions in a historical context. However, if you want to talk about what really happens in TODAY'S world...

How about?: I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness. or Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. or Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. Perhaps Joe the humanist need to actually read the Bible instead of finding verses from anti-religious writings. He might find: A scorner seeketh wisdom, and there is none for him; but knowledge is easy unto the intelligent. or He that is wise will hear, and will increase learning; and the intelligent will gain wise counsels Or perhaps it is just a case of: The heart of an intelligent man seeketh knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish feedeth on folly.

Wisdom makes one wise man more powerful than ten rulers in a city. Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man's face And changes its hard appearance. Both verses are from my new favorite book in the Bible, Ecclesiastes. The Bible has many authors, and voices many views. Believe what you will, but know what you believe. Dogma is dogma is dogma.

Think of it this way.. all the self sacrifice, blood spilling, pain and suffering have been condensed into eating a cracker and sipping a shot of koolaid once a week.. The church has mastered the art of bullshit to such a way that chomping on a dried out cracker and sipping on grape koolaid is now the body of christ and the spilled blood and BLAH BLAH BLAH.. Ask yourself this..if YOU yourself had to endure what they claim christ endured would you settle for a bunch of idiots eating crackers and sipping koolaid and saying oops once a week sufficient as a ways to atone for their sins? I call it the assholing down of the world..same as dumbing down except on a grander scale.. lol
