Because silence is precious just like gold :)
-
When you are silence then people around will not mess with you.
-
Because it sometimes pays more to be silent. Words can easily destroy things that can never be repaired again, therefore silence can be of much more value, like gold.
-
Sometimes words can hurt others so if we remain silent for a minute...then maybe we wont say those mean words. Im learning just now to try to live by thoses words. Silence can indeed be Golden in this text.
-
Because silence is a rarity in this loud busy world. It shows that you don't always need to talk with a companion, sitting in silence can be just as rewarding. I also know that Duck Tape is silver! ;D
-
If all the words you speak are filled with grace, wisdom and kindness, you need not remain silent. However, most of us on occasion do not make perfect word choices...we are not as knowledgeable about some things as we think we are...we have opinions about people/things that are way off base but we don't know it yet...in such instances it is best to remain silent! :)
-
Because the other choice is often BS.
-
Between a fast pace loud world, and people that talk too much, silence is like a rare jewel.

1) "Etymology Calque of the Latin silentium est aurum Proverb silence is golden 1. Peace and quiet have immense value. 2. Often the best choice is to say nothing." Source and further information: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/silence_is_golden 2) "speech is silver, but silence is golden proverbial saying, mid 19th century; meaning that discretion can be more valuable than the most eloquent words (see also the abbreviated form silence is golden)." [1834 Carlyle in Fraser's Magazine June 668]" Source and further information: http://www.answers.com/topic/speech-is-silver-but-silence-is-golden 4) ""It is interesting that the aphorism, "Silence is golden, " represents what is left of the complete saying, "Speech is silvern, but silence is golden," "This derives from an ancient proverb written in Aramaic which first appeared in the Talmud Megillah and Midrash Rabbi Esther (Chapter 6) in relation to prayer,"" Source and further information: http://www.pep-web.org/document.php?id=apa.009.0007a (google cache) "In the first chapter (Mishna 17) we find that Shimon, the son of Rabban Gamliel used to say: All my days I grew up among the sages, and I have found nothing better for a person than silence. The virtues of silence are mentioned in other places as well. The Talmud (Megillah 18a) states that A word (is valuated) for a sela (a monetary unit), but silence (is valuated) for two sela's. Why is silence worth more than speech? Why is there nothing better for a person than silence? The Shelah explains we find that the above lesson from the tractate of Megillah is applied even to the words of Torah. Why is this the case? When a person is engaged in the study of Torah or prayer, the person is in essence standing before G-d. When standing before G-d, we have to be composed. We have to carefully contemplate what we are about to say. Our expressions should be clear and focused. Silence allows us the time to pause and reflect on what we are about to do. It provides us with an opportunity to prepare ourselves so that our words are the most effective they can be. Rather than speaking off the cuff and engaging in discourse that may be less than substantial, we need to be silent for a bit. After we have engaged in some contemplative silence, we are ready to speak effectually." "And to rephrase the words of the Talmud quoted above, silence is golden."
