the reason that you are told to not eat after midnight before a surgery is because when you are on the operating table and lying down, you could become nauseous from the anesthesia and throw up, and the vomit could aspirate into your lungs......which would kill you.......take care....Brian.....

because when you are under aenethesia your muscles relax and before being intubated (if intubated at all)the food or liquid in your stomach could come up the throat and get into the airway. This could allow you to choke or even get what they call aspiration pneumonia where you get small amounts of liquid in the lungs. Other reasons being some drugs may not work as quickly or effectively with food in the body. Nausea after sedation and oxygen given can make you vomit fi you have a full stomach and depending on the procedure, a full stomach full of liquids and foods could be a nasty mess if opening up parts of the stomach or other local organs..
