The Quest for Karla (1982), by John le Carré, is an omnibus edition of three novels concerning George Smiley's fight against Karla, his counterpart in the Soviet KGB. The "Karla Trilogy" includes: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - (1974) The Honourable Schoolboy - (1977) Smiley's People - (1979) Le Carre’s characters are wonderfully flawed and prne to temptation. He was an officer in the M15 until Kim Philby blew his cover and he had to retire. You can still tell though that he has friends in high places ( see “The Tailor of Panama”).

The Parker books by Richard Stark(aka Donald Westlake):"He steals; he kills; it's a living." The series seemingly ended with Butcher's Moon in 1974, but then returned in the 90s with Comeback, Backfire, Firebreak, etc. The books from Parker's viewpoint are straightforward; those from his sidekick Grogan's are humorous. Grogan is an actor committed to the legitimate stage-he refuses to do TV, so makes $ as an armed robber...
